JOONAS HYVÖNEN
Joonas Hyvönen is a Helsinki-based visual artist, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts who works mainly with digital media, especially with 3D animation. His works are often story-based studies in which narrative tools are turned into instruments of reflection. A manuscript and a way of working that are open to intuitive interpretation produce works that can be interpreted in multiple ways. Most recently, Hyvönen’s works have been exhibited at Forum Box in Helsinki and Uusi Kipinä in Lahti.

Sematectonia is a 3D animated video work that discusses online spaces as stigmergic spaces of interaction between users and the environment. Stigmergy is a term that describes phenomena such as the communication between ants using chemical messengers. However, the environments in the work acquire some features referred to by Timothy Morton as hyperobjects, and develop their own active agency instead of just passively passing on messages.
In the work, the character that throws baskets behind his back finds himself stuck in a loop in which he, as if cursed, produces the same content over and over again, aware of his situation but unable to stop. It’s inspired by the trick shot videos we see on social media, in which seemingly impossible tricks with, say, a football or basketball, can be done using thousands of repetitions or editing. As the environment becomes even weirder, the protagonist must confront it as something that exists not only for him but rather with him.
